Apex Historical Society

On October 22, 1987, a small group met to talk about ways to preserve, protect and promote the history of the Apex area. That group, and others with the same vision, formed the Apex Historical Society to capture and retain history from the towns colorful past as a small, rural settlement and insure the character of that early time remains a part of the rapidly evolving community of today and helps to guide its future progress. Officially chartered on March 24, 1988, the Apex Historical Society has grown to include both new and long time residents sharing a common interest.

Since its inception, the Society has presented the Town of Apex with a Community Tree, initiated a town Tree Lighting Ceremony and researched and prepared documentation for the nomination of the 1914 Apex Union (Passenger) Train Depot and the 1912 Market House/Town Hall to the National Registrar of Historic Places. These structures have also been declared Wake County Historic Landmarks. The Apex Historical Society was instrumental in working with the Town of Apex in establishing and listing three Historic districts within the town limits. The Society also acquired a retired railroad caboose and placed it adjacent to the 1914 Union Depot for the enjoyment of the community.
